POPULAR PROGRAMS*
Art After SchoolStudents in grades 1-5th will embark on a journey of self-discovery and expression by examining the art of Harlem Renaissance artists Romare Bearden, William H. Johnson, Jacob Lawrence and Augusta Savage.  Utilizing different mediums and techniques, both 2D and 3D, students will explore concepts of embracing their identity and gaining strength through courageous self expression.  These concepts will inspire their art and draw relevant parallels across time and culture. Through paintings, collage, clay sculpture and other multimedia projects, students will express their message that “I know who I am, I like who I am, I am made stronger by embracing who I am.”

ArtSmart, is an early learning program that introduces young children to art terms and techniques. As children learn to express their ideas through art they will build fine motor skills while exploring color, texture, shapes and different types of art materials.

Clay Pottery  provides students with an introduction to working with clay through hands-on training. Students will learn basic clay, pottery, and sculpture concepts using different tools and hand-building techniques while creating multiple projects throughout the semester.  This class is designed to help cultivate the students’ creative instinct, fine motor skills and visual proportion by shaping and creating texture with clay.
Sculpture Magic was created to develop our student’s sculpture making ability from idea to finished state. Students will gain experience working with basic three-dimensional materials, such as clay wood, paper, metals, and fiber. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to effectively manipulate multiple materials and create interesting and unique solutions to original sculptures. City ArtWorks will provide all the supplies and tools for the classes. Clay created sculptures will be fires at the City ArtWorks studio.

Multi-Media
is an opportunity for students to
explore new artistic learning experiences which stretches their creative capacities and their perceptions of themselves and the world. Students' creativity is fostered through age appropriate visual arts curriculum. City ArtWorks will guide children through a variety of mediums, themes, artists, techniques and art history that contributes to the development and processes of art creation and society. Students' creativity will be nurtured in a fun environment through a variety of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional methods and media including drawing, painting, printmaking, fabric construction and more!

 More about ArtSmart
City ArtWorks has a special art program designed for children in Pre-K and Kindergarten called ArtSmart. These early learning art classes introduce young children to the wonderful world of art by letting their natural creative abilities unfold in a fun environment. While they are exploring color, texture, shapes, and different types of art materials, they are learning to freely express their feelings and ideas through art projects. ArtSmart is designed to help children develop fine motor skills and perceptual thinking, as well as learn to appreciate art for its own sake. Children will draw, paint, make 3-dimensional constructions, and other creative projects. See our ArtSmart lesson list for details about some of the fun art projects being offered this spring.

Through City ArtWorks' Art After School (for 1st- 8th grade) and ArtSmart (Pre K- Kindergarten) programs, thousands of  students each year are exposed to new artistic learning experiences which stretch their creative capacities and their perceptions of themselves and the world. This highly respected program has been touching the lives of children for over 30 years!

In most City ArtWorks' classes, art teachers meet with students after school  for one hour to 90 minutes a week for  9-20 week sessions.
