All About Art After School
Through Art After School, thousands of elementary and middle school students each year are exposed to new art experiences. This highly respected program has been touching the lives of children for 27 years!
Art teachers meet with school students for one hour a week for a nine-week session to present a fully developed, age appropriate, visual arts curriculum that explores art making, art history and famous artists. Tuition per nine-week session is $80 and includes all art supplies and a student portfolio. Financial Aid is available for students who qualify for the National School Lunch Program.
You will find Art After School in more than 85 Houston-area elementary and middle schools in Houston, Klein, Spring Branch, Cypress-Fairbanks, and Magnolia Independent School Districts, as well as several private schools, neighborhood community centers, and apartment complexes. Nearly 40% of the schools where City ArtWorks teaches our program are Title 1 or Charter Schools. In addition, City ArtWorks offers year-round Art After School classes at our Wirt and Westview Studio location.
For the Spring 2010 semester, City ArtWorks explored the work of American artist John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925), best known for his masterful portraits. Lesson plans were inspired by the artist's portrait of Mrs. Joshua Montgomery Sears in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and their "Sargent and the Sea" exhibit last February. For the Fall 2010 semester, the Art After School curriculum will focus on Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Spanish artist and sculptor. Picasso was a child prodigy who produced thousands of paintings, prints, sculptures, and ceramics during his life. He is considered by many as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a co-founder of Cubism. With Picasso's work as inspiration, City ArtWorks teachers will present fun, hands-on art lessons. During each class, students will be introduced to the artist's work through visual aids, while teachers share information about the artist and his work. Students then create their own unique works of art. Classes focus on nurturing students' creativity using basic art techniques and tools. Lessons will include drawing, painting, sculpture, and more! Please check back in mid-August for the fall lesson list.
In addition, City ArtWorks has a separate art program for Pre-K and Kindergarten children called ArtSmart. This early learning art class introduces young children to the wonderful world of art by letting their natural creative abilities unfold in a fun environment. While they are exploring color, texture, shapes, and different types of art materials, they are learning to freely express their feeling and ideas through art projects. ArtSmart is designed to help children develop fine motor skills and perceptual thinking, as well as learn to appreciate art for its own sake. Children will draw, paint, make 3 dimensional constructions, and other creative projects.
